Kylaq Drives Skoda Car Sales In August 2026; 4,971 Units Sold

Skoda Auto India closed August 2026 with 4,971 passenger vehicle sales, a softer month for the Czech carmaker. The figure marks a decline of around 13 percent from the 5,710 units the brand sold in July 2026. The dip stands out even more given the broader market performed strongly through August, with industry-wide wholesale sales touching a record 4,48,319 units, a growth of roughly 35.7 percent year-on-year.

Kylaq Continues to Carry the Brand

The Kylaq remained Skoda's clear volume leader in August, with 3,099 units sold. That's more than 62 percent of the brand's entire monthly total coming from a single model. The compact SUV has become central to Skoda's India strategy, giving the brand a genuine shot at one of the country's largest and fastest-growing segments. Even so, Kylaq volumes slipped from 3,727 units in July, mirroring the brand's overall slowdown. Moreover, on August 21, 2026, Skoda introduced a new Sportline variant with a sportier exterior theme, catering to enthusiasts who want the SUV to look as aggressive as it drives.

Skoda Slavia facelift

The Slavia sedan was one of the few models to see growth, rising marginally from 993 units in July to 1,008 units in August. Skoda also unveiled the 2026 Slavia facelift during the month, with bookings opening ahead of festive-season deliveries.

The Kushaq, however, wasn't as fortunate. Even with the recent facelift, sales fell from 833 units in July to 789 units in August, a sign that segment-first additions like rear-massaging seats and an AI-based infotainment assistant haven't been enough to move the needle. It reflects just how competitive the mid-size SUV space has become, with rivals now offering wider feature lists and multiple powertrain choices. Meanwhile, the Kodiaq, Skoda's premium three-row SUV, stayed a low-volume niche product with just 75 units sold, though it continues to play a role in the brand's premium positioning.

Wider Market Context

Skoda's numbers look weaker set against the industry's record August. Separate registration data also showed combined Skoda-Volkswagen registrations at 7,458 units, down 17.5 percent year-on-year. Globally, Skoda has been expanding its EV push, reporting record BEV deliveries of 108,200 units in the first half of 2026, up 48.3 percent year-on-year, while India-specific BEV deliveries rose 7.4 percent to 35,700 units.

What's Next for Skoda in India

The festive season could be Skoda's chance to recover lost ground, with the Kylaq's continued demand and the refreshed Slavia both positioned as growth drivers heading into the busiest car-buying months of the year.

End Note

Meanwhile, Skoda-Volkswagen Group (SAVWIPL) has signed a non-binding MoU with JSW Group for a 51:49 alliance, with JSW taking majority control of the group's India business, a first for an Indian conglomerate. The new entity will cover all eight Skoda and Volkswagen brands sold here, though premium marques like Audi, Porsche, and Bentley stay out for now.

It's still just an MoU, with a Rs 20,000 crore tax liability and scope details left to settle before a binding deal by year-end. But after a three-year search for a partner, this is the clearest sign yet that Volkswagen's India business could finally get the capital and localisation push it has long needed.
